Setup Instructions for Linux

jEMS requires a Java VM and Java Web Start to run, we've had the best luck with Sun's distribution. The proper way to install these depends on the distro, but here are some examples:

Ubuntu

This is an example of installing Sun Java and running jEMS in Ubuntu Natty (11.04)

								# Enable the partner repository and update apt
								# (you should be able to replace 'natty' with lucid or maverick, whatever applies to you)
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ natty partner"
								sudo apt-get update

								# Install Sun's Java VM
								sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre

								# Set the default java and javaws binary
								sudo update-alternatives --config java
								sudo update-alternatives --config javaws

								# Run jEMS
								javaws http://emcs.unl.edu/downloads/jems/jEMS-new.jnlp

OpenSUSE

This is an example of installing Sun Java and running jEMS in OpenSUSE

								# Install Sun's Java VM
								sudo zypper in java-1_6_0-sun

								# Set the default java and javaws binary
								sudo update-alternatives --config java
								sudo update-alternatives --config javaws

								# Run jEMS
								javaws http://emcs.unl.edu/downloads/jems/jEMS-new.jnlp
